Ester Ferreira studied Organic Chemistry at the University Nova de Lisboa, Portugal and Conservation Science and DeMonfort University, England. Her PhD research at the University of Edinburgh and the National Museums of Scotland focused on the analysis of flavonoid dyes using LC-MS and was completed in 2002. In 2003 she joined the Painting studies group at the FOM Institute AMOLF, in Amsterdam concentrating in binding media analysis and chemistry. In 2006 she became head of the analytical laboratory at the Swiss Institute for Art research SIK-ISEA in Zürich, Switzerland exploring new techniques in the study of painting chemistry and reactivity, gradient formation and material mobility within paint systems. In 2016 she was appointed Professor of applied sciences in conservation and restoration at CICS (cologne Institute for conservation sciences) at the TH Köln in Cologne, Germany.
